So you’ve decided that you’re ready to transform your outdoor space or landscaping in the DC area, how exciting!
Before the holes are dug or the plants ever come in, having a successful landscaping consultation with your DC landscaper is essential to the process and often dictates whether or not your yard turns out the way you envision.
In a landscape consultation with Lanier Landscapes, I like to keep it pretty lowkey, while still getting to know you and what you dream of your yard becoming. The thing to keep in mind though, is that your landscape consultation and design really works best when you (not just me!) walk in prepared. So let’s walk through exactly what to expect and how to make the most of your first DC landscaping consultation.
Before You Schedule, Gather These 4 Things
Before we meet, I’d like you to start collecting a few things.
- Grab an aerial view of your property. A plat or even a screenshot from Google Maps works well too!
- Take photos of the plants you love and plants you absolutely don’t want anywhere near your space.
- Bookmark inspiration photos of gardens that make you stop and stare. These don’t have to be local DC landscaping examples (though those are great, natives are always a priority!). Your inspiration images can be anything that speaks to you; it doesn’t matter if it’s a garden style, a color palette, or a type of seating area.
- Next, let’s start some more strategic thinking and consider how you’ll use your space…
Think about how you actually want to use your space. Are you envisioning small patio moments, or are you imagining hosting events? Do you not have kids now, but expect that might change? Do you have pets that need space to roam? What about privacy? Do you want to feel enclosed and cozy, or open and airy? Jot down any specific hardscaping ideas too. Firepit? Patio? Deck? Pathways? The more concrete your ideas are, the better I can understand your vision right from the get-go.

What Happens in a DC Landscape Consultation Walkthrough?
Most initial consultations take about 30 minutes to an hour. We’ll walk around your property together, and I’ll be taking notes the entire time. I’m not just looking at what’s there, I’m looking at what could be there.
I’ll start by asking you questions about the areas you’re unhappy with right now. Maybe your patio feels too small, there’s a corner that looks neglected, or maybe you love part of your yard but wish another section worked better. We’ll talk about whether we’re reworking existing hardscaping, moving things around, or starting fresh.
I’ll ask about colors that make your heart sing, too. We’ll discuss specific plants you know you love and even the ones that for some reason you absolutely cannot stand.
I like to understand your style too: are you drawn to country-style gardens, something modern and sleek, a Japenese-inspired space, English whimsical gardens, or is shade the priority>
Seeing the examples from your inspiration photos here helps me understand a lot about what “beautiful” means to you.

We’ll Chat Yard Maintenace for DC Landscapes Too
An area that many people get hung up on is yard and lawn maintenance. It’s important to talk about and consider because it determines how realistic your garden is for you. There’s a lot to consider here before investing in refreshing your outdoor space. Consider things like:
- Do you want something that requires minimal watering and care, or are you willing to maintain irrigated beds and tend to plants regularly?
- How much time do you realistically want to spend outside doing yard work each week?
- Are you planning to handle maintenance yourself, or will you be hiring a landscaping service to manage it?
- Do you want a lawn at all, or would you rather replace some (or all) of it with lower-maintenance groundcover or planting beds? Are you interested in an irrigation system, or would you prefer to water by hand (or let nature take the lead)?
- Is pest and weed control something you’re prepared to stay on top of, or should we design with that in mind to minimize it?
There’s a lot to consider, but also no wrong answer here. All that really matters is that we’re on the same page. As your DC landscaping designer, I know firsthand that a yard that demands more attention than you’re willing to give will never make you happy, no matter how beautiful it looks.
Topography matters too. Does your yard slope? Is it flat? Does your current landscape actually work for your needs, or does the land itself need some adjusting before we can design around it? If you have pets, we’ll make sure your outdoor space works for them as well, that might mean thinking through fencing, sightlines, or choosing plants that are pet-friendly.
And yes, we’ll talk about budget. I want you to start thinking about the investment you’re comfortable making for this project, and roughly how you’d like to see that broken down between hardscaping, planting, and any ongoing maintenance. It also helps to know whether you’re hoping to tackle everything at once or would rather phase the work over time. None of this needs to be locked in during our first conversation, but having a general range in mind helps me design something that’s actually achievable for you, rather than a plan that looks great but doesn’t fit your reality.

The Design Process
After our walkthrough, I’ll create a comprehensive design for your space. Then we meet again, usually for another 30 minutes to an hour at your house, to go over the plan together. I’ll walk you through the design, explain the choices I made, and show you how it all works together.
This is also when we talk about more detailed numbers. I’ll give you an exact estimate for the work, and we can discuss what makes sense for your budget and timeline. Sometimes that means phasing the project; sometimes it means adjusting the scope. This conversation is where we figure out the best path forward for you.
Once you approve, we take it from there.
What to Actually Expect for Your DC Landscaping Consultation
Come to your DC landscaping consultation ready to share your vision, but also be open-minded because I might see possibilities you haven’t considered and I love to be creative1 Your yard has its own potential, and sometimes the best designs come from conversations, not just from what you thought you wanted walking in.
Wear shoes you can walk in because we’ll likely be covering some ground! Bring those inspiration photos and plat on your phone or printed out, and be honest about what you love and what you don’t.
The more authentic you are about your style, lifestyle, and willingness to maintain certain things, the better I can design for you.
And here’s the thing about DC landscaping, we have unique opportunities with our climate, our soil, and our seasons. I know what thrives and what struggles here. My job is to create something beautiful that actually works in our region, for your specific property, in a way that fits your life.

I’m a Chevy Chase, DC-area landscape designer with 3 kids and 2 dogs that always keep me on my toes. Nature has always been a part of my life and as a child, I spent countless hours in the garden alongside my mother, learning the rhythm of the seasons and the joy of nurturing a living space. Now, I continue to find inspiration in the beauty of nature.
I founded Lanier Landscapes in 2013 after noticing how many outdoor spaces felt impersonal — beautiful but lacking warmth, functional but uninspired. I’m here to help you create an outdoor space that you can’t wait to come home to.
